A total station is an optical surveying instrument that uses electronics to calculate angles and distances. It combines the functions of a theodolite with that of a transit level and electronic distance meter (EDM). The combination of these functions makes it possible to capture the relative position of the to be measured points (XYZ Coordinates). These 3D measurements are usually performed during repairs, modifications, new builds or as-built/ quality control checks.
3D scanning is like a digital 3D photograph of the real world – but where each pixel in a digital photo only contains color information, each pixel in our “3D images” further contains information about its position in XYZ coordinates in space.
